This Water Tank Art located at the Port of Tampa Bay was Completed in 2017 by Artist Eric Henn.
Eric Henn created an amazing masterpiece on the Citgo oil tank. This mural called “Oceans” is viewed by many people
around the world on a daily basis. Cruise ships dock the port regularly so it is great that the tourists aboard the cruise liners get to see this amazing sea life painted on the oil tanker.
The City of Tamper really wanted to create something that would make a big impression when first entering into the Tampa Bay Port.
The Captivating blue underwater scene features the Manatees, an endangered species. Their population is estimated to be at least 13,000 manatees, with more than 6,500 in the south-eastern United States and Puerto Rico.
Manatees are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, the Endangered Species Act of 1973, and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978.
The rest of the sea creatures complete a nature scene with dolphin and sea turtle life. Eric Henn carefully planned the arrangement of the oil tank mural’s compositional elements to complement its round form. The result is that one of the manatees and the sea turtle above it seem to be coming right at the viewer.
Water is notoriously difficult to paint accurately, yet “Oceans” possesses a realistic rendering of this integral element of human and animal life. In the mural, light reflects off of and is diffracted by an uneven or slightly choppy surface, patterns are projected onto the skin of the animals and the ocean floor. The way these lines of light follow the curvature of the dolphin and manatee bodies adds visual interest and palpable perspective.
